Recently I acquired a great set of Cuban posters gathered by Bay Area activist Felix Kramer. There are over 60 posters from various agencies, and are of impeccable provenance - I know when and how he got them. Felix explains:

Before the Venceremos Brigades, I was part of an early SDS-sponsored trip to Cuba. 

Our group of 30 — including we later found, one informant — met in Dallas for an orientation by former SDS President Todd Gitlin. Then we flew to Cuba via Mexico City. 

We arrived in August 1968, just after Russia invaded Czechoslovakia, which of course was very problematic for Cuba. We were especially welcomed at the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC). We saw new movies that went global, including Lucia and Memories of Underdevelopment.

Though most flew back after three weeks, I and a companion stayed for nine. We returned on a freighter to Canada taking with us memorabilia and over 50 movie and political posters. At Toronto, colleagues from Buffalo SDS picked us up. Burying our contraband under junk in the back of their station wagon, we easily crossed via the Peace Bridge into the U.S. 

Back at Cornell, I spoke and wrote about Cuba, and organized a large poster exhibit. This spring, for the first time in decades, I opened up the big poster tube. Now I’m thrilled that LIncoln has found homes for these works of art and advocacy..

I'm now in the process of infilling my own collection and distributing them to other deserving homes, including the Center for the Study of Political Graphics in LA (I'm on the board) and through my New York Cuba poster expert Erik Martinez. Thank you, Felix, for this important solidarity gift.
